Thermal propagation describes the chain reaction in which a cell in runaway releases enough heat and hot gas to drive neighbouring cells into runaway as well. Design countermeasures include spacing, barrier materials, directed venting and cooling; evidence is provided by testing at cell, module and system level. The term must be separated from fire propagation between units or buildings in the building-code sense.

Thermal Propagation beschreibt die Kettenreaktion, bei der eine durchgehende Zelle so viel Wärme und heißes Gas abgibt, dass Nachbarzellen ebenfalls in den Runaway geraten. Konstruktive Gegenmaßnahmen sind Abstände, Barrierematerialien, gezielte Entgasungsführung und Kühlung; der Nachweis erfolgt über Prüfungen auf Zell-, Modul- und Systemebene. Von der Brandausbreitung im bauordnungsrechtlichen Sinn (Fire Propagation zwischen Einheiten oder Gebäuden) ist der Begriff zu trennen.
