Thermal runaway describes the condition in which heat generated inside a cell exceeds the heat that can be removed, triggering further exothermic decomposition reactions. Triggers include internal short circuits, mechanical damage, overcharge and overheating. Flammable and toxic gases are released; the event initially concerns a single cell and must be distinguished from propagation to neighbouring cells.

Thermal Runaway bezeichnet den Zustand, in dem die in einer Zelle freigesetzte Wärme schneller entsteht, als sie abgeführt werden kann, sodass weitere exotherme Zersetzungsreaktionen ausgelöst werden. Auslöser sind unter anderem interne Kurzschlüsse, mechanische Beschädigung, Überladung oder Überhitzung. Es entstehen brennbare und toxische Gase; der Vorgang betrifft zunächst eine einzelne Zelle und ist von der Ausbreitung auf Nachbarzellen (Thermal Propagation) zu unterscheiden.
