Lithium plating occurs when lithium ions cannot intercalate into the anode quickly enough during charging and instead deposit as metallic lithium on its surface. It is promoted by low temperatures, high charging currents and high state of charge. Consequences are irreversible capacity loss and, in extreme cases, dendrite formation with increased short-circuit risk, which is why charge permissions are limited as a function of temperature.

Lithium-Plating tritt auf, wenn Lithium-Ionen beim Laden nicht schnell genug in die Anode eingelagert werden können und sich stattdessen metallisch auf deren Oberfläche abscheiden. Begünstigt wird dies durch niedrige Temperaturen, hohe Ladeströme und hohen Ladezustand. Die Folge sind irreversibler Kapazitätsverlust und im Extremfall Dendritenbildung mit erhöhtem Kurzschlussrisiko, weshalb Ladefreigaben temperaturabhängig begrenzt werden.
