Cylindrical cells have a round, typically steel- or aluminium-based can with a defined vent element for controlled degassing. The 18650 format originated in consumer electronics but was also used in electric vehicles for years; newer formats such as 21700 and, in particular, the larger 4680 format target higher energy density and reduced interconnection effort per vehicle. Compared with prismatic and pouch cells, cylindrical cells offer high mechanical robustness and well-characterized safety behaviour, but lower packing density within a module due to their round shape.

Zylindrische Zellen besitzen ein rundes, meist stahl- oder aluminiumbasiertes Gehäuse mit definiertem Berstelement zur kontrollierten Entgasung. Das 18650-Format stammt ursprünglich aus der Consumer-Elektronik, wurde jedoch über Jahre auch in Elektrofahrzeugen eingesetzt; neuere Formate wie 21700 und insbesondere das größere 4680-Format zielen auf höhere Energiedichte und geringeren Verschaltungsaufwand pro Fahrzeug ab. Gegenüber prismatischen und Pouch-Zellen bieten zylindrische Zellen eine hohe mechanische Robustheit und gut charakterisiertes Sicherheitsverhalten, jedoch aufgrund der runden Form eine geringere Packungsdichte im Modul.
