Balancing compensates differences in state of charge between individual cells that arise from manufacturing tolerances, temperature gradients and differing self-discharge. Passive balancing dissipates excess charge as heat across resistors; active balancing redistributes it between cells. Without balancing, the weakest cell determines the usable capacity of the entire string.

Balancing gleicht Unterschiede im Ladezustand einzelner Zellen aus, die durch Fertigungstoleranzen, Temperaturgradienten und unterschiedliche Selbstentladung entstehen. Beim passiven Balancing wird überschüssige Ladung über Widerstände in Wärme umgesetzt, beim aktiven Balancing zwischen Zellen umverteilt. Ohne Balancing bestimmt die schwächste Zelle die nutzbare Kapazität des gesamten Strangs.
