The EMS decides when and at what power the storage system charges or discharges, taking into account market prices, load profiles, generation forecasts, grid restrictions and plant limits. It must be separated from three neighbouring terms: the BMS protects the battery, the PPC controls compliance at the point of connection, and SCADA primarily serves visualisation and data acquisition. In practice the boundaries vary by supplier, so the functional split should be fixed contractually.

Es ist von drei Nachbarbegriffen zu trennen: das BMS schützt die Batterie, der PPC regelt die Einhaltung der Vorgaben am Netzverknüpfungspunkt, und SCADA dient primär der Visualisierung und Datenerfassung. In der Praxis verschwimmen die Grenzen je nach Anbieter, weshalb die Funktionsabgrenzung vertraglich festzulegen ist.
