Verlust an aktivem Material
Full Name (EN)
Loss of Active Material (LAM)
Short Definition (EN)
The second formal main mechanism of capacity fade: physical loss of usable electrode material through structural breakdown, cracking, or loss of electrical contact.
Category (EN)
Battery Ageing, Degradation and Life Cycle
Definition (EN)
As the second formal main mechanism of capacity fade, loss of active material describes the physical loss of usable electrode material, for example through structural breakdown of active material particles, cracking resulting from repeated volume change, particularly pronounced in silicon and alloy anodes, or through individual particles losing electrical contact with the current collector, such as under insufficient binder adhesion. Unlike loss of lithium inventory, the focus here is not on the bound lithium itself but on the dwindling amount of structurally still-functional material that can participate in the electrochemical reaction at all. Both mechanisms, loss of lithium inventory and loss of active material, overlap in a cell's real ageing progression and are often quantified separately in cell research through differential capacity analysis.
Full Name (DE)
Verlust an aktivem Material (Loss of Active Material, LAM)
Short Definition (DE)
