Lithiuminventarverlust

Full Name (EN)

Loss of Lithium Inventory (LLI)

Short Definition (EN)

One of the two formal main mechanisms of capacity fade: irrecoverable loss of cyclable lithium, primarily through progressing SEI growth.

Category (EN)

Battery Ageing, Degradation and Life Cycle

Definition (EN)

Loss of lithium inventory denotes one of the two formal main mechanisms of capacity fade and describes the irrecoverable loss of cyclable lithium, that is, lithium available for the charge-discharge process, caused mainly by progressing growth of the SEI layer, which irreversibly binds lithium in the process, as well as by lithium plating and its follow-on reactions. It should be conceptually distinguished from loss of active material, which describes the physical loss of electrode material itself, independent of how much lithium is bound within it. In ageing research and the development of SoH prognosis models, distinguishing between the two mechanisms matters, since they exhibit different signatures in ageing behaviour and require different countermeasures in cell design.

Full Name (DE)

Lithiuminventarverlust (Loss of Lithium Inventory, LLI)

Short Definition (DE)
