The cathode is the positive electrode of a lithium-ion cell and accepts the lithium ions released by the anode during discharge. Its chemical composition, such as lithium iron phosphate in LFP or a nickel-manganese-cobalt mixed-oxide structure in NMC, largely determines the energy density, thermal stability, cost and supply-chain dependencies of the entire cell. The common name of a cell chemistry, such as LFP or NMC, therefore usually refers to the cathode material, while the anode material is graphite in most cases and less often gives its name to the chemistry.
