Insulation monitoring continuously measures the electrical resistance between the ungrounded high-voltage system and vehicle or enclosure ground, detecting an emerging or existing ground fault before it creates an electric shock hazard. The required minimum insulation resistance is usually expressed relative to system voltage, e.g. in ohms per volt, and is specified in frameworks such as UN R100. Unlike HVIL, which checks a physical connector interface, insulation monitoring assesses the electrical state of the insulation itself.

Die Isolationsüberwachung misst kontinuierlich den elektrischen Widerstand zwischen dem ungeerdeten Hochvoltsystem und der Fahrzeug- oder Gehäusemasse und erkennt so einen sich anbahnenden oder bereits bestehenden Erdschluss, bevor daraus eine Gefährdung durch elektrischen Schlag entsteht. Der geforderte Mindestisolationswiderstand wird üblicherweise auf die Systemspannung bezogen angegeben, etwa in Ohm pro Volt, und ist in Regelwerken wie UN R100 spezifiziert. Anders als der HVIL, der eine physische Steckerverbindung prüft, bewertet die Isolationsüberwachung den elektrischen Zustand der Isolation selbst.
