ISO 26262 describes a risk-based approach to functional safety across a vehicle's entire life cycle, from concept through development and production to decommissioning. Safety-relevant functions are classified by Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), with ASIL D carrying the highest requirements. In the battery context, the standard chiefly concerns the BMS, whose monitoring and shutdown functions are safety-relevant. It is the automotive-specific derivative of the generic IEC 61508 and tailors it to the vehicle domain without replacing it.
