ASIL is derived for each safety-relevant function from a combination of the severity of potential harm, probability of exposure, and controllability by the driver, and determines which development, testing and verification obligations apply. Battery-related functions such as overcharge protection or insulation monitoring are frequently assigned ASIL C or D, while non-critical comfort functions require no ASIL classification (QM). ASIL is not identical to SIL under IEC 61508, even though both concepts rest on a similar risk logic.

Der ASIL wird für jede sicherheitsrelevante Funktion aus einer Kombination von Schwere eines möglichen Schadens, Eintrittswahrscheinlichkeit und Beherrschbarkeit durch den Fahrer abgeleitet und bestimmt, welche Entwicklungs-, Test- und Nachweispflichten gelten. Für batterienahe Funktionen wie Überladeschutz oder Isolationsüberwachung wird häufig ASIL C oder D angesetzt, während unkritische Komfortfunktionen ohne ASIL-Einstufung (QM) auskommen. Der ASIL ist nicht mit dem SIL nach IEC 61508 identisch, auch wenn beide Konzepte auf einer ähnlichen Risikologik beruhen.
