Compared with the pyrometallurgical route, the process typically achieves higher recovery rates, particularly for lithium, but is more complex from a process engineering standpoint and requires careful control of chemical input and wastewater treatment. Many modern recycling plants combine both approaches, using pyrometallurgical pre-treatment ahead of hydrometallurgical fine processing.

Beim hydrometallurgischen Recycling wird zerkleinertes Zellmaterial, meist bereits als Schwarzmasse vorliegend, in wässrigen Säuren gelaugt, wodurch die enthaltenen Metalle in Lösung gehen und anschließend über gezielte chemische Fällung oder Extraktion einzeln zurückgewonnen werden können. Das Verfahren erzielt im Vergleich zur pyrometallurgischen Route üblicherweise höhere Rückgewinnungsraten insbesondere für Lithium, ist jedoch prozesstechnisch komplexer und erfordert eine sorgfältige Steuerung des Chemikalieneinsatzes und der Abwasserbehandlung. Viele moderne Recyclinganlagen kombinieren beide Verfahren, indem eine pyrometallurgische Vorbehandlung der hydrometallurgischen Feinaufbereitung vorgeschaltet wird.
