The main contactor is an electromechanical switching element controlled by the BMS that connects the battery to the rest of the high-voltage system in normal operation and actively disconnects it upon detected fault conditions, such as overtemperature, overcurrent or an interrupted HVIL. Battery systems usually feature at least two main contactors, one in the positive and one in the negative path, to ensure safe all-pole disconnection. The contactor is always closed via a precharge circuit to avoid inrush current spikes at the DC-link capacitor.

Batteriesysteme verfügen üblicherweise über mindestens zwei Hauptschütze, eines im Plus- und eines im Minuspfad, um eine sichere allpolige Trennung zu gewährleisten.
