Beim Direktrecycling wird das Kathodenaktivmaterial nicht, wie bei hydro- oder pyrometallurgischen Verfahren üblich, bis auf die einzelnen chemischen Elemente zurückgeführt, sondern die bestehende Kristallstruktur weitgehend erhalten und durch gezielte Behandlung, etwa Relithiierung, wieder in einen einsatzfähigen Zustand versetzt. Dieser Ansatz verspricht potenziell geringeren Energieaufwand und höhere Materialausbeute, befindet sich jedoch noch überwiegend im Pilot- und Demonstrationsstadium und stellt hohe Anforderungen an die Sortenreinheit des Ausgangsmaterials, da unterschiedliche Kathodenchemien nicht ohne Weiteres gemeinsam verarbeitet werden können.
