Cell-to-chassis goes a step beyond cell-to-pack: the battery cells or the battery enclosure themselves take on a load-bearing structural role within the vehicle body, rather than being fitted as a separately mounted assembly. This can reduce weight and overall height, but substantially increases the complexity of maintenance and repair, since the battery can no longer be readily removed as a standalone unit. Crashworthiness gains additional importance under this design, since the battery enclosure becomes part of the crash load paths.
