In cell sorting, manufactured cells are classified by measured values such as capacity, internal resistance and self-discharge rate, so that cells with as similar properties as possible can be grouped into a module or pack. Manufacturing-related variation between cells is unavoidable; however, if strongly dissimilar cells are connected within the same string, the weakest cell determines the usable capacity of the entire string in operation and ages disproportionately fast. Careful cell sorting therefore reduces the later balancing effort and extends the overall system's service life.

Bei der Zellsortierung werden gefertigte Zellen nach Messwerten wie Kapazität, Innenwiderstand und Selbstentladerate klassifiziert, um für ein Modul oder Pack Zellen mit möglichst ähnlichen Eigenschaften zusammenzustellen. Fertigungsbedingte Streuungen zwischen Zellen sind unvermeidlich; werden jedoch stark unterschiedliche Zellen im selben Strang verschaltet, bestimmt im Betrieb die schwächste Zelle die nutzbare Kapazität des gesamten Strangs und altert überproportional schnell. Eine sorgfältige Zellsortierung reduziert damit den Aufwand für das spätere Balancing und verlängert die Lebensdauer des Gesamtsystems.
