In the Z-fold stacking process, a continuous separator web is folded in a zigzag pattern, with anode and cathode sheets alternately inserted between the individual folded layers, rather than winding electrodes spirally as in conventional winding. The process is mainly used for pouch cells and, compared with winding, enables more uniform mechanical stress distribution and an electrode shape tailored to the specific cell geometry, but is more demanding and potentially slower in production throughput than continuous winding processes. The choice between stacking and winding affects both achievable manufacturing speed and certain aspects of the cell's ageing behaviour.

Beim Z-Fold-Stapelverfahren wird eine kontinuierliche Separatorbahn im Zickzackmuster gefaltet, wobei zwischen den einzelnen Faltlagen abwechselnd Anoden- und Kathodenblätter eingelegt werden, statt Elektroden wie beim klassischen Wickelverfahren spiralförmig aufzurollen. Das Verfahren wird vor allem bei Pouch-Zellen eingesetzt und ermöglicht im Vergleich zum Wickeln eine gleichmäßigere mechanische Spannungsverteilung sowie eine an die jeweilige Zellgeometrie angepasste Elektrodenform, ist jedoch in der Fertigungsgeschwindigkeit anspruchsvoller und potenziell langsamer als kontinuierliche Wickelverfahren.
