UPS classification under VFD, VI and VFI describes three fundamental technical concepts for how an uninterruptible power supply responds to mains disturbances. VFD units, colloquially standby UPS, switch to battery operation only upon mains failure and pass through mains voltage fluctuations unfiltered during normal operation. VI units, so-called line-interactive UPS, additionally actively stabilize the output voltage. VFI units, known as online double-conversion UPS, permanently convert the input voltage to DC and back to AC, fully decoupling output voltage and frequency from the mains and its quality, at the cost of lower efficiency during continuous operation.

Die USV-Klassifizierung nach VFD, VI und VFI beschreibt drei grundlegende technische Konzepte, wie eine unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung auf Netzstörungen reagiert. VFD-Geräte, umgangssprachlich Standby-USV, schalten erst bei Netzausfall auf Batteriebetrieb um und lassen Netzspannungsschwankungen im Normalbetrieb ungefiltert durch. VI-Geräte, sogenannte Line-Interactive-USV, stabilisieren die Ausgangsspannung zusätzlich aktiv. VFI-Geräte, bekannt als Online-Doppelwandler-USV, wandeln die Eingangsspannung permanent in Gleichstrom und zurück in Wechselstrom, wodurch Ausgangsspannung und -frequenz vollständig vom Netz entkoppelt und unabhängig von dessen Qualität sind, allerdings auf Kosten eines geringeren Wirkungsgrads im Dauerbetrieb.
