Site selection assesses potential project locations against several, partly competing criteria: available grid connection capacity and position in the interconnection queue, land availability and building permission, such as under § 35 BauGB in Germany's non-built-up areas, distances to residential buildings in the context of fire safety planning, and access to relevant energy markets and control areas. Early, well-founded site assessment reduces the risk of a project failing late in development due to permitting or grid connection hurdles. For co-location projects, proximity to existing or planned generation infrastructure is additionally relevant.
