Modbus is a simple, widely adopted cross-vendor communication protocol originally developed for serial communication and now predominantly used as Modbus TCP over Ethernet networks. In BESS installations, Modbus often serves as the base protocol for connecting PCS, BMS, meters, and other field devices to the higher-level SCADA or EMS system, since nearly all common components provide a Modbus interface. Compared with more complex, object-oriented protocols such as IEC 61850, Modbus offers lower implementation complexity but also less standardized semantics, requiring project-specific alignment of the registers and data points used between participating systems.
