Power factor relates active power to apparent power, indicating how efficiently the connection capacity provided at the grid connection is actually converted into usable work; a power factor of 1 means pure active power transfer with no reactive component. Many technical connection rules require network operators to maintain a minimum power factor or a specific reactive power range at the point of connection, since a low power factor at a given active power requires disproportionately high apparent power and hence higher network losses and more heavily rated equipment. For purely sinusoidal quantities, power factor is identical to the cosine of the phase angle between current and voltage, but the two diverge in the presence of harmonics.

Der Leistungsfaktor setzt die Wirkleistung ins Verhältnis zur Scheinleistung und gibt an, wie effizient die am Netzanschluss bereitgestellte Anschlussleistung tatsächlich in nutzbare Arbeit umgesetzt wird; ein Leistungsfaktor von 1 bedeutet reine Wirkleistungsübertragung ohne Blindleistungsanteil. Netzbetreiber fordern in vielen technischen Anschlussregeln die Einhaltung eines Mindestleistungsfaktors oder eines bestimmten Blindleistungsbereichs am Netzverknüpfungspunkt, da ein niedriger Leistungsfaktor bei gegebener Wirkleistung eine überproportional hohe Scheinleistung und damit höhere Netzverluste sowie größer dimensionierte Betriebsmittel erfordert. Bei rein sinusförmigen Größen ist der Leistungsfaktor identisch mit dem Kosinus des Phasenwinkels zwischen Strom und Spannung, bei Vorhandensein von Oberschwingungen weichen beide Größen jedoch voneinander ab.
