The Kalman filter is a recursive mathematical estimation method that combines a model-based prediction of state of charge with actual measurements, such as voltage and current, weighted according to their respective uncertainty, to achieve a more robust SoC estimate than pure coulomb counting or pure voltage measurement alone. Since current-sensor measurement errors accumulate over time under pure coulomb counting, the Kalman filter continuously corrects this drift using the voltage measurement and the underlying cell model. In practice, extended variants such as the Extended or Unscented Kalman Filter are frequently used to capture the nonlinear characteristics of cell behaviour.
