Definition (EN)
Intercalation denotes the reversible insertion of lithium ions into the layered or lattice structure of a host material, for example between the graphite layers of the anode or into the crystal structure of a cathode oxide such as NMC or LFP, without destroying the host material's fundamental structure in the process. This mechanism is the eponymous operating principle of the classical lithium-ion battery and differs fundamentally from the lithium metal anode, in which lithium is not inserted into a host material but deposited as its own metallic phase. The speed and reversibility of intercalation substantially determine a cell's achievable charge and discharge power as well as its cycle life, since incompletely reversible intercalation over many cycles contributes to loss of active material and hence capacity fade.

Definition (DE)
