Graphite is the dominant anode material in most of today's lithium-ion cells and is either mined and processed as natural graphite or produced synthetically from petrochemical precursors. Synthetic graphite tends to offer more uniform material properties and enables higher charging power, but incurs a significantly higher energy input and hence carbon footprint in production than natural graphite. A large share of global graphite processing, particularly the energy-intensive refinement to battery-grade quality, currently takes place in China.

Graphit ist das in den meisten heutigen Lithium-Ionen-Zellen dominierende Anodenmaterial und wird entweder als Naturgraphit abgebaut und aufbereitet oder synthetisch aus petrochemischen Vorprodukten hergestellt. Synthetischer Graphit bietet tendenziell gleichmäßigere Materialeigenschaften und ermöglicht höhere Ladeleistungen, verursacht jedoch einen deutlich höheren Energieaufwand und damit CO2-Fußabdruck in der Herstellung als Naturgraphit. Ein Großteil der weltweiten Graphitverarbeitung, insbesondere die energieintensive Veredelung zu batterietauglicher Qualität, findet heute in China statt.
