Explosive limits define the concentration range of a flammable gas in air within which an ignitable mixture exists: below the lower explosive limit the mixture is too lean, above the upper explosive limit too rich, to ignite. Decomposition gases released during a thermal runaway can, if their concentration in the ambient air falls between the specific explosive limits of the given gas mixture, trigger a deflagration in the presence of an ignition source, which is why off-gas detection typically triggers an alarm well below the lower explosive limit. For a battery room's ventilation design, continuously diluting possible gas accumulations below the lower explosive limit is a central safety objective.

Die Explosionsgrenzen definieren den Konzentrationsbereich eines brennbaren Gases in Luft, innerhalb dessen ein zündfähiges Gemisch vorliegt: Unterhalb der unteren Explosionsgrenze ist das Gemisch zu mager, oberhalb der oberen Explosionsgrenze zu fett, um sich zu entzünden. Bei einem thermischen Durchgehen freigesetzte Zersetzungsgase können, sofern ihre Konzentration in der Umgebungsluft zwischen die spezifischen Explosionsgrenzen des jeweiligen Gasgemischs fällt, bei Vorhandensein einer Zündquelle eine Deflagration auslösen, weshalb die Gasdetektion typischerweise bereits deutlich unterhalb der unteren Explosionsgrenze Alarm auslöst. Für die Lüftungsauslegung eines Batterieraums ist die kontinuierliche Verdünnung möglicher Gasansammlungen unter die untere Explosionsgrenze ein zentrales Sicherheitsziel.
