The degradation curve shows a battery system's expected or measured capacity loss over years of operation or cycle count and forms the technical basis for capacity guarantees and augmentation planning. It combines the overlapping effects of calendar and cycle ageing and, in practice, often does not follow a linear path but shows accelerated degradation toward the end of life, the so-called knee in the ageing curve. Manufacturer degradation curve figures should always state the underlying operating conditions, such as temperature, DoD and C-rate, since these materially affect actual ageing.

Sie setzt sich aus den überlagerten Effekten kalendarischer und zyklischer Alterung zusammen und verläuft in der Praxis häufig nicht linear, sondern zeigt gegen Ende der Lebensdauer eine beschleunigte Degradation, den sogenannten Knick in der Alterungskurve. Herstellerangaben zur Degradationskurve sollten stets die zugrunde gelegten Betriebsbedingungen wie Temperatur, DoD und C-Rate ausweisen, da diese die tatsächliche Alterung erheblich beeinflussen.
