Reactive power results from the phase shift between current and voltage and is expressed in var; it performs no work but is required for voltage control in the grid. Together with active power (W) it forms apparent power (VA), which governs the thermal rating of converters, cables and transformers. Modern PCS can supply reactive power without active power throughput, a capability increasingly required by grid connection rules.

Blindleistung entsteht durch die Phasenverschiebung zwischen Strom und Spannung und wird in var angegeben; sie verrichtet keine Arbeit, ist aber für die Spannungshaltung im Netz notwendig. Zusammen mit der Wirkleistung (W) ergibt sie die Scheinleistung (VA), die die thermische Auslegung von Umrichtern, Kabeln und Transformatoren bestimmt. Moderne PCS können Blindleistung auch ohne Wirkleistungsumsatz bereitstellen, was in Netzanschlussregeln zunehmend gefordert wird.
