The binder is a polymeric binding agent, typically based on PVDF or, increasingly for cost and environmental reasons, water-based alternatives such as CMC/SBR, that mechanically holds together the particles of active electrode material and conductive additives and fixes them to the current collector. An insufficiently sized or ageing-weakened binder can lead to active material detachment and consequently capacity loss and increased internal resistance. The choice of binder system also influences electrode behaviour under the volume changes that silicon-containing anodes in particular undergo during charging.

Der Binder ist ein polymeres Bindemittel, üblicherweise auf Basis von PVDF oder, zunehmend aus Kosten- und Umweltgründen, wasserbasierter Alternativen wie CMC/SBR, das die Partikel des aktiven Elektrodenmaterials und der Leitadditive mechanisch zusammenhält und auf dem Stromkollektor fixiert. Ein unzureichend dimensionierter oder alterungsbedingt geschwächter Binder kann zu Ablösung von Aktivmaterial und damit zu Kapazitätsverlust und erhöhtem Innenwiderstand führen. Die Wahl des Bindersystems beeinflusst zudem das Verhalten der Elektrode bei den Volumenänderungen, die insbesondere siliziumhaltige Anoden während des Ladens durchlaufen.
